International business has always been a core part of Michael McGuire’s professional life. Michael is Vice President of Commercial Insurance at Johnson Kendall Johnson, Inc. (JKJ) and a BABCPHL board member.. JKJ’s cross-border relationships date back to the 1980s and 1990s. Michael views membership with the BABCPHL as an opportunity to further develop “additional specialties and markets.” As he puts it, “JKJ has a deep and storied history in working with cross-border businesses,” and with the UK as “one of the United States’ and Pennsylvania’s largest trading partners, the BABCPHL was a clear target of ours.”
Since joining, Michael has found the BABCPHL’s network of professionals to be a key resource. “The BABC boasts a robust cohort of specialists that our clients value and utilize on a regular basis,” he explains. “Being able to provide value to clients above and beyond insurance and safety/risk management has been invaluable.” Through affiliation with the organization, Michael has been able to strengthen his professional relationships and better support his clients in the international business space.
When it comes to standout experiences, Michael points to two events as must-attends: the Holiday Luncheon and the British Chip Shop gatherings. “Each event is phenomenal in completely different ways,” he says. “The Holiday Luncheon brings together the top business leaders and dignitaries in the area for a high-end event, whereas the Chip Shop event convenes a smaller collection of members in a cozy suburban restaurant. However, the value and energy are abundant for both.” Lucky enough, the British Chip Shop event is just a couple of weeks away.
Beyond the business connections, Michael values how being part of the international community broadens his perspective. “Expanding my worldview applies culturally, economically, and politically. Very few decisions, actions, or pieces of news occur that don’t have global implications. The global economy is complex; having an active role in the international business community provides JKJ with a competitive advantage.”
Michael offers the following advice to prospective members, “You get out what you put into it,” he says. “We believe it’s imperative to prioritize supporting the organization and making connections to members and prospective members. The best strategy for doing this is to attend events, offer expertise, and build relationships with members and supporters.”
For those looking to grow their presence in Philadelphia’s international business community, Michael’s experience is a testament to the benefits of active involvement with the BABCPHL.
