Ties Between Two Great Nations – American & British Architecture & Design – Recap

On Tuesday, October 17, 2023, the British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia presented Ties Between Two Great Nations – American & British Architecture & Design. The event was held at Carpenters’ Hall, an iconic building and treasure in historic Philadelphia. Special thanks to our sponsor, UK Business & Trade/British Consul-General New York, and program partners, the Carpenters’ Company, and the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia for collaborating with us.

The historic relationship between the UK and Greater Philadelphia carries over to present-day aspects of society, including city planning, building, construction, engineering, design, and architecture. Post-Brexit, the UK has an opportunity to launch new export markets, and UK architects are one example. This year, the US and the UK signed a mutual recognition agreement (MRA) of qualifications in architecture which further enhances trade ties between the two nations.

The Art of the Matter – Global Intrigue & International Auctions – Recap

On Thursday, September 14, 2023, British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia members and friends gathered for The Art of the Matter – Global Intrigue & International Auctions. This post-summer networking reception took place at Freeman’s, America’s oldest auction house. The evening underscored the US and the UK’s strong legacy of cultural, political, and economic ties dating back nearly 250 years. The program explored the unique relationship between the two countries, featuring three keynote speakers who each addressed a different theme – art, family governance and wealth succession planning, and bourbon. While these three things are quite different, they each contributed to an amazing event that could have been a mystery novel starring a bourbon called “Never Say Die,” a sponsor connected to James Bond, and a TV personality who values antiques… It was a perfect recipe for an intriguing event!

The Big Help Out

Monday, May 8, 2023 was designated a UK bank holiday in honor of the King’s Coronation. The royal family suggested people volunteer as part of “The Big Help Out” on this day across the United Kingdom in tribute to the King’s lifetime of public service. The Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and “The Big Help Out” highlight issues His Majesty has dedicated his life to, including: the importance of local communities, sustainability and environmental protection, and showcasing youth and diversity. The objective was to encourage volunteerism to bring communities together to create a legacy from the coronation weekend.

The BABCPHL contributed to “The Big Help Out” by collaborating with the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia and the British Consulate New York on a UK-themed teacher appreciation lunch at Bodine High School for International Affairs. Bodine High School for International Affairs was co-founded by the Council in partnership with the School District of Philadelphia.
