For Women’s History Month, we are proud to spotlight Karen McIntyre, a member whose career reflects resilience and the power of embracing opportunity.

As a Senior Advisor, Business Development Officer, and Partner at Wescott Financial Advisory Group, her work includes investments, income taxation, and estate planning strategies. In addition to advising clients, she plays a key role in bringing in new clients to the firm.

Her path into the financial industry was not traditional. Originally, she majored in counseling psychology with the goal of becoming a therapist. An opportunity arose in 1993 that changed her career trajectory, a friend connected her with a financial planner in need of support. Within just one week at that job, she realized she had found her perfect
fit.

She entered into a heavily male-dominated profession, and often found herself as one of only a handful of women in the room. She did not let that fact intimidate her,

“I didn’t allow myself to be intimidated nor did I try to mirror the men”

Her empathy, active listening, and relatability became defining qualities that distinguished her approach and built lasting trust with clients.

Reflecting on her journey, her advice to her college self is,

“be open to accepting opportunities that may not at first blush, seem like they are fully aligned with your goals.”

She emphasizes the importance of authenticity, leaning into your strengths, appearing confident, taking risks and standing up for yourself.

“You are your biggest advocate. Work hard and don’t be shy about asking for what you want.”

A defining moment in her career came when the founder of her prior firm encouraged her to step outside her comfort zone, assuring her that she would not fail. That bit of
confidence allowed growth and empowered her to take risks.

Her journey has not been without challenges. Early in her career, she faced an environment where inappropriate workplace norms were common. Opting out of uncomfortable social settings often meant missing opportunities for connection and advancement. However, she remained committed to her values, finding alternative ways
to build relationships and credibility.

“I attempted to play golf just so I could be part of the group making decisions.”

She also encountered clients who were hesitant to trust a young woman with financial advice. Through her commitment to developing confidence and her skills, she overcame those biases.

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate Karen’s story, one built through courage, adaptability, and the determination to create your own path.
