On May 21, 2026, the British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia brought together regional leaders for a panel discussion on the economic, cultural, and community impact of the 2026 FIFA World Cup’s arrival in Philadelphia.
Hosted at Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP, the evening began with welcome remarks from Zac Taormina, President of the British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia, and Regional Operations Director – Americas at Johnson Matthey, who welcomed the packed, sold-out, audience and recognized the many organizations whose partnership helped make this event possible. Zac then introduced Pierre-Olivier Lugez, Senior Director of International Business & Global Strategy at the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Commerce, who offered welcome remarks on behalf of Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. Marine Fraval-Vennel then reflected on the global momentum generated by France’s hosting of the 2024 Summer Olympics and spoke about the anticipated surge in business activity expected to accompany an even larger global sporting event: the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Philadelphia. She also noted that the French National Team, which is set to play in Philadelphia on June 22, is ready to compete in the “French-est city in America.” Following her remarks, leaders from the sports, tourism, and international business communities engaged in a discussion on the local economic impact of the World Cup.
The panel discussion, moderated by Andrew Rocks, Partner at Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP, featured Larry Needle, Executive Director, PHL Sports at the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau; Meg Kane, Host City Executive and CEO, Philadelphia Soccer 2026; and Chris Branscome, CEO, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer and Soccer Operations Advisor, FIFA World Cup 26 Philadelphia. Framed by Chatham House Rule, the conversation examined what the World Cup means for Philadelphia and the broader region, from economic impact and global visibility to youth soccer participation, community engagement, and the opportunities the tournament presents for local businesses, hotels, restaurants, and cultural institutions preparing to welcome visitors during the city’s 39-day World Cup celebration.
Following the panel, attendees continued the conversation during a lively networking reception, where guests exchanged insights, strengthened connections, and explored new opportunities for collaboration ahead of the World Cup. The evening also included a raffle featuring items generously donated by the Philadelphia Union, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer, and U.S. Soccer, giving attendees a chance to take home even more World Cup-themed gear in anticipation of the matches ahead. All attendees received complimentary gift bags featuring FIFA-branded items generously provided by Philadelphia Soccer 2026, along with donated items from the Philadelphia Union, helping build excitement for the month and a half of celebrations ahead.
