On November 6, 2025, the British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia (BABCPHL), in partnership with Saint Joseph’s University, the Royal Air Force, and the British & Commonwealth Remembrance Project, hosted a beautiful and moving ceremony commemorating the 85th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The event brought together representatives from the United Kingdom and the United States, academic and military communities, and local business leaders in a shared act of remembrance and unity.

Guests gathered at Saint Joseph’s University’s Hagan Arena for an evening of reflection and fellowship. The program began with the Presentation of the Colors by the The First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry, followed by God Save the King and the U.S. National Anthem.

Oliver Christian, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for North America and His Majesty’s Consul General to New York, opened the ceremony by honoring the two American fighter pilots, Pilot Officer A.R. Zatonski and Pilot Officer DePyster Brown, who fought alongside the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain. He highlighted the enduring friendship between the U.S. and the U.K. and their shared commitment to democracy, peace, and freedom.

Dr. James (Jay) Carter, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of History at Saint Joseph’s University, accepted the honor of housing the commemorative plaque on behalf of the university. He reflected on the university’s deep connection to military service through its ROTC program and on the historical significance of preserving the memory of those who defended liberty during one of history’s most pivotal battles.

Captain John Martin, U.S. Navy (Retired) and Director of the British & Commonwealth Remembrance Project, spoke about the Project’s mission to honor the transatlantic ties forged in service and sacrifice. He introduced Group Captain Simon (Nev) Nevin OBE MA RAF, U.K. Assistant Air and Space Attaché to the United States, who presented the plaque and recognized those who made the dedication possible, including Lt. Col. Jason “Lager” Beck, Commander of AFROTC Detachment 750 at Saint Joseph’s University. Nev gave further insight into the lives of the Pilot Officer A.R. Zatonski and Pilot Officer DePyster Brown, truly making this special program an honest and commemorative one.

Thereafter, the plaque was unveiled and accepted by: James Carter, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, Saint Joseph’s University; Hank Gillem, Veterans Affairs Director, Saint Joseph’s University; and two SJU students in the ROTC program: Connor Watts and Christian Urquhart. The ceremony concluded with remarks from Howard Silverstone MBE, President Emeritus of the BABCPHL, who expressed gratitude to all organizations and individuals involved—the British & Commonwealth Remembrance Project, Royal Air Force, Saint Joseph’s University, and the BABCPHL—for their collaboration in bringing this significant commemoration to life.

Following the formal program, guests enjoyed a warm reception and networking hour, continuing conversations that celebrated the enduring bond between the United States and the United Kingdom. It was a meaningful evening of remembrance, respect, and unity—honoring the past while strengthening the transatlantic partnership that continues to inspire future generations.
