His Royal Highness The Prince Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT GCVO was the guest of honor presiding over the rededication of the Bicentennial Bell Garden at 3rd and Walnut Streets in Independence National Historical Park on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. Mayor Parker welcomed HRH and attendees for the special event.
The Duke spoke from the heart as he fondly recalled Her Majesty The Late Queen Elizabeth II, his mother. Nearly half a century ago, in honor of America’s 200th birthday, Her Majesty presented the City of Philadelphia with the Bicentennial Bell, symbolizing the enduring friendship, and strong cultural, political and economic ties between the US and the UK.
In 2013, The Bicentennial Bell was put into storage, while its new home at 3rd and Walnut streets was being designed. On July 12, 2024, Hannah Young, His Majesty’s Consul General came to Philadelphia for the ribbon cutting ceremony to welcome the return and reinstallation of the bell. On April 30, 2025, His Royal Highness The Prince Edward officially hosted the dedication ceremony of the Benjamin Rush Garden and Bicentennial Bell, thanking the city for taking such good care of the gift from Her Majesty and the park. The Duke reminded everyone about what unites the US and the UK – a desire to uphold the values of culture, education, economy and security. He emphasized the two nations shared values that stand out the most to be freedom, peace and friendship.
It was a great pleasure to welcome the Duke back to the city for this special occasion. The BABCPHL was honored to collaborate with the Independence National Historical Trust and Carpenters’ Hall on the Royal Visit.
