On Thursday, November 21, 2024 the British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Club welcomed British author Katherine Carter to the City to promote her new book. This special event included a black-tie cocktail hour, a dynamic and engaging presentation by Katherine, and a formal multicourse dinner.
Katherine, curator and historian has managed the house and collections at Chartwell, Churchill’s country home, for more than a decade. Her newest book, Churchill’s Citadel: Chartwell and the Gatherings Before the Storm was released in the US on November 5, 2024.
Katherine’s riveting book offers fascinating insight about how Churchill’s meetings at Chartwell, strengthened his fight against the Nazis. She tells the extraordinary story of the remarkable but little-known meetings that took place behind closed doors at Chartwell. From household names to political leaders, diplomats to spies, Katherine reveals a fascinating cast of characters, each of whom made their mark on Churchill’s thinking and political strategy. With Chartwell as his base, Churchill gathered intelligence about Germany’s preparations for war—and, in doing so, put himself in a position to change the course of history.
This program provided BABCPHL and Philadelphia Club members with the exclusive opportunity to meet Katherine, a widely sought after commentator and adviser on the life and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill. Katherine lectures internationally and appears frequently in print and broadcast media.
The BABCPHL was honored to collaborate with the Philadelphia Club to showcase Katherine’s work, a major new history of Churchill in the 1930s.
