UK-US Transatlantic Trade Quarterly Policy Fireside Chat: A Trifecta – How are Brexit, the pandemic and Free Trade Agreement policies going to affect your business?

On Wednesday, September 9, 2020, the British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia partnered with the Department for International Trade and the Welsh Government for our first quarterly policy briefing. This briefing featured Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner Antony Phillipson, Jonathan Price, The Chief Economist for the Welsh Government and Ruth Bacigalupo, Head of Services, Welsh Government Trade Policy team, and was moderated by Neil Boyden Tanner, International Markets General Counsel at Cigna and UK-US Government Liaison for the British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia.

This interactive webinar included professionals from the international business community. The discussion focused on the UK-US Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Brexit, and how the pandemic might influence global trade in the short, medium and long terms. Topics included the mood and reaction of Britons and Americans about the FTA and the evolution of public sentiment; an assessment of the early impact of the pandemic on the FTA; the status of negotiations; major sticking points between the two countries, and how the bilateral talks have intensified; and how free-trade advocates adjust policies and messaging to acknowledge and account for legitimate concerns while maintaining core principles and support. The conversation also focused on climate change and the Conference of the Parties (COP), the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Convention.
