British Business in Bloom

A Brilliant! Opportunity to Network, Learn, Dine and Visit the 2013 Philadelphia Flower Show

On Thursday, March 7, 2013, the British American Business Council (BABC) of Greater Philadelphia hosted British Business in Bloom: A Brilliant! Opportunity to Network, Learn, Dine and Visit the 2013 Philadelphia Flower Show featuring Drew Becher, President of The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), and Chris Woods, Director, PHS Meadowbrook Farm. This program inaugurated the BABC’s second annual British Invasion series of events – BABC inspired opportunities to foster connections, expand business and enjoy British themed programs throughout the City.

More than 80 people gathered for the BABC’s exclusive luncheon at The Pennsylvania Convention Center in the SkyBox overlooking the central feature of the 2013 Flower Show – a stunning Big Ben with an LED clock face screen that once an hour turned into a video of iconic British entertainers. This very special program was truly brilliant! The BABC was honored to partner with PHS in lead-up to the 184th Philadelphia Flower Show. The keynote speakers provided excellent insight into the valuable work of PHS and the “inside story” behind this year’s Flower Show theme. Drew’s report of the annual economic and community impact the Flower Show has on the City of Philadelphia was staggering. The revenue generated from a show of this magnitude brings millions of dollars and visitors to the City. Drew explained year-round PHS programs, benefit the City Harvest program, which creates green jobs and supports a network of community gardens that raise fresh produce for more than 1,000 families in need each week during the growing season. Chris, a native of England, began his career at the Royal Botanical Gardens where he was trained as a horticulturalist. His anecdotal stories and history behind the absolutely magnificent central feature of the Show and the British theme were both fascinating and entertaining.

All attendees were treated to excellent networking, informative presentations, wine, and a delicious meal in the private event space overlooking the crowded floor of the Flower Show. Two tickets to see Under the Whaleback during Brit Invasion 2013 week at the Wilma Theater were donated for the business card raffle and PHS graciously gave each guest a pack of flower seeds, a discount offer to see Cirque du Soleil, and a flash drive. Special thanks to BABC Ambassador Member, PHS and all participating Board Members and their companies for their support of this special program. The BABC was proud to donate a portion of proceeds from this event to Teens 4 Good, a youth-led entrepreneurial farm and nutrition business that transforms vacant lots into urban gardens/farms, improving access to healthy food for communities, and creating meaningful jobs for at-risk youth.
