The Big Help Out

Monday, May 8, 2023 was designated a UK bank holiday in honor of the King’s Coronation. The royal family suggested people volunteer as part of “The Big Help Out” on this day across the United Kingdom in tribute to the King’s lifetime of public service. The Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and “The Big Help Out” highlight issues His Majesty has dedicated his life to, including: the importance of local communities, sustainability and environmental protection, and showcasing youth and diversity. The objective was to encourage volunteerism to bring communities together to create a legacy from the coronation weekend.

The BABCPHL contributed to “The Big Help Out” by collaborating with the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia and the British Consulate New York on a UK-themed teacher appreciation lunch at Bodine High School for International Affairs. Bodine High School for International Affairs was co-founded by the Council in partnership with the School District of Philadelphia. We were honored to work with the Council and the Consulate to highlight King Charles’ commitment and to recognize the important work of Bodine High School teachers and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week here in the US.

Circular Transformation: Designing Business Models for Durability, Reuse, Remanufacturing and Recyling

Industries and businesses have set ambitious sustainability targets for the next 10-20 years compelling companies to reuse and recycle in more efficient and innovative ways, rather than using raw materials.

A circular economy retains the value of products or resources by putting them back into the product cycle after use and enhancing waste management. Yet, a recent Bain & Company Survey found that 60% of active circularity initiatives have not reached scale. Stakeholders need to come together to build the operating system for the circular economy, find new forms of collaboration and follow the footsteps of industry innovators.

Duane Morris Institute: Protected Conversations – Salvation in the Face of Difficult UK Dismissals?

Under UK employment legislation there are several ways in which a difficult employment situation can create a risky departure scenario.
Whether the employee is choosing to leave of their own volition -but is clearly angry or upset, and therefore potentially litigious, or whether the employer is having to dismiss the employee but has concerns about litigation – either way the risk factor can be high with $100K damages the norm.
All UK employees with 24 months’ employment service are protected against dismissal at will.
A protected conversation is an “off the record” privileged conversation between an employer and employee by which an employer can initiate privileged pre-termination negotiations with an employee to explore the possibility of a consensual exit settlement agreement.
Protected conversations can be a swift and effective way to allow the parties an option to explore a consensual exit in a difficult employment situation, without a litigation risk or without invalidating a subsequent formal dismissal process.

Nic Hart Managing Partner of our London Office and Employment team is providing a training session on how and when to have a protected conversation, the risks that arise, the formalities required, and the use of settlement agreements.
