2023 Signature Annual Holiday Lunch – Goal! Transatlantic Commerce & The Business Behind Sports

On Thursday, December 7, 2023, we hosted our Signature Annual Holiday Lunch. The theme of this year’s program was the business behind sports – an economic industry driver and a global unifier. Elevating the business of sport throughout the transatlantic corridor is a slam dunk, and the UK and US are prominent players. Our region is known throughout the globe for enthusiastically supporting sports teams and legends. Philadelphians welcome and rally around games; they are deeply committed to and invested in this booming industry. Our luncheon highlighted the play-by-plays, celebrated international business, and rang in the holiday season.

The BABCPHL is proud to drive, support and attract engagement for the great pastime – sport, a powerful vehicle for societal change. Industry professionals and stakeholders presented what is happening in this important business sector and how the UK and Greater Philadelphia are partnering to win! Special guests and keynote speakers from both the public and private sectors delivered remarks and informative presentations. The room was full of nearly two hundred guests who gathered for this annual signature program.

Special thanks and recognition to BABCPHL President, Howard Silverstone for running the show and ensuring everyone was engaged and entertained; David Briel, Deputy Secretary, Office of International Business Development, Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development; Anne Nadol, Commerce Director, City of Philadelphia; and Emma Wade-Smith OBE, HM Trade Commissioner for North America & Consul General New York all spoke about the strong trade and commercial ties between the two nations. Lead sponsors, Gregg Caren, President & CEO, Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau spotlighted Philadelphia as the premier destination for major industry conferences and sporting events, and Leon Dutkiewicz Jr., CPA, Partner, Citrin Cooperman introduced keynote speaker, Heather Mitts, President, Philly Women’s Pro Soccer, LLC. After lunch, lead sponsors Peter Rosenberg, Partner – Chairman of Stonehage Fleming Americas; Andrew Rocks, Partner, Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP; Maria Grasso, SVP, Convention Division, Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau; Stephen Neuman, Vice President, Global Government Affairs, American Airlines; and Tim McDermott, President, Philadelphia Union and Union Sports & Entertainment, engaged in a dynamic industry panel discussion seamlessly led by Emma Wade-Smith. Panelists covered many topics, including advising private high net worth individuals and families, major league sports teams and sports industry players; the importance of global connectivity via reliable air transportation; and the rise, fame and success of Philly’s hometown soccer team, Philadelphia Union.

It’s an exciting time in sports history, and momentum is building! Philadelphia is hosting FIFA World Cup 2026™ matches, and the Philadelphia Phillies are heading to London for a two-game regular-season series this June when Major League Baseball returns for another summer showdown. It was an ideal time for the BABCPHL to highlight the business behind sports. Guests were attentive and enjoyed learning what was presented during the program. After the panel discussion, attendees had the opportunity to win nearly two dozen raffle prizes generously donated by regional retailers, restaurants, bars, arts institutions, and sports teams, and American Airlines AAdvantage miles for a pair of roundtrip, Business Class tickets on American Airlines’ award winning, non-stop service from Philadelphia International Airport to London.

Each year during the holiday season the BABCPHL selects a regional charity to support. We are proud to donate a portion of proceeds from this event to Youth Mentoring Partnership, an organization dedicated to helping kids who reside in under-resourced communities develop the skills needed for personal growth and success.

Special thanks to BABCPHL 2023 Holiday Lunch lead sponsors without whom this event would not have been possible: American Airlines; Citrin Cooperman; Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP; Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau; Philadelphia Union; and Stonehage Fleming, and premier sponsors: Forensic Resolutions and Penn Medicine. We are grateful to each of these members, along with all those who purchased corporate tables.

Best wishes for a healthy, happy, and prosperous holiday season. We are thankful for your support and look forward to seeing you in the New Year.
