A Global Economic Update – 2023 & Beyond Recap

Businesses and investors are facing unprecedented challenges in an increasingly complex economic environment. On Thursday, March 16, 2023, the British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia proudly presented A Global Economic Update: 2023 & Beyond to a group of more than 65 professionals. This timely panel discussion featured financial industry executives and government officials who expertly shared essential information about the current state of the global economy.

Special thanks to William Sasso, Chairman Emeritus, Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young, LLP for his generosity and gracious hospitality. The beautiful conference room with sweeping views of the City was at capacity with guests from the international business community, including the British, Eurasian and French Chambers of Commerce, The World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, and The World Trade Centers of Delaware and Philadelphia. Bill welcomed everyone, and opened the meeting by introducing Oliver St. Clair Franklin CBE, Honorary British Consul for Greater Philadelphia. Oliver moderated the session with headline speakers: Kunal Khatri, Deputy HM Trade Commissioner for North America, British Consulate General New York; Ben Kirshner, Chief Transformation Officer, Office of the Governor, State of Pennsylvania; Mark E. McCarron CFA, Partner, Chief Investment Officer, Wescott Financial Advisory Group LLC; Anne K. Nadol, Commerce Director, Department of Commerce, City of Philadelphia; and Ryan Wang, US Economist, HSBC Securities.

Our distinguished presenters highlighted economic drivers and addressed how the US and the UK are navigating the challenging global landscape. They discussed the policy measures and structural reforms that regions and institutions are putting into place to mitigate risk and alleviate pressure. The conversation also included how public and private sector entities are operating in both countries and collaborating with groups throughout the world to stabilize and grow economies at home and abroad.

Speakers imparted vital information about the rapidly changing current economic situation, and what we may be able to expect in the near term. Attendees actively participated in the conversation by posing probing questions about various matters such as major infrastructure projects in the US and Europe; the banking industry and how current issues plaguing this sector differ from the economic crisis of 2008; the geopolitics of Northern Ireland and continental Europe; the impact of the current banking crises on the middle market; and the role of “Systemically Important Banks.” The dynamic discussion delivered valuable information about the economy, here at home and abroad. Many thanks again to our knowledgeable speakers, event host, and partners who collaborated with us to offer this timely educational program. Presenters and guests remained long after the event to network.
